GREENSBORO – During community meeting, on February 7, Lakeview Elementary students got a chance to express their gratitude, through words and handmade cards, to community members Roger and Margie Prevot.

The Prevots, who recently donated Nordic ski equipment for Lakeview’s Nordic Ski Program, shared their passion for skiing, which was characterized by Mr. Prevot as “our number-one hobby.” The students and special guests swapped trail stories and considered the merits of skiing on a brilliant, sunny day versus post-winter storm when the powder seems miles high.

Lakeview Elementary has a strong commitment to engaging students in lifelong winter wellness opportunities. The skis have allowed students to access the trail system next to the school during physical education class and to participate in weekly ski programming at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Tuesday afternoons.

In addition, about 20 students from Lakeview, Hardwick and Woodbury Elementary Schools participate in the weekly winter after-school program that utilizes cross country trails adjacent to Lakeview that are maintained by Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

For community members interested in volunteering, the Nordic program runs now through March 14 on Thursday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. when school is in session. Volunteers do not have to commit to every session but will need to have their own gear. To learn more about applying to volunteer, please contact Lorelei Wheeler ([email protected]) at Lakeview Elementary.
