VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – St. Johnsbury Academy (SJA) track star Andrew Thornton-Sherman can now add National Champion to his long list of accolades, after a record setting performance in the 800m at the High School Adidas Nationals in Virginia Beach two weeks ago.
Thornton-Sherman’s time of 1:53.72 set a new meet record in the 800m event as he edged Jeffery Linton of Williamsburg, Va., to claim the title. The previous record of 1:54.21 was set by Julian Carter II last year. The National Title puts a stamp on a stellar winter season for Thornton-Sherman who broke his own state record in the 1000m at The New England Indoor Track Championships earlier this month. He also nearly broke his own Vermont state record in the 800m at the New Balance Nationals and now claims the first and second fastest times by any Vermont high schooler. Thornton-Sherman and his Hilltopper track and field team will aim for their fourth straight Division I state title later this spring. His older brother Evan who is a former Vermont Gatorade Runner of the Year for the SJA, continues to set records at Ole Miss.
Hunt to Coach Craftsbury Academy Track and Field
CRAFTSBURY – After a lengthy search for a new track and field head coach at Craftsbury Academy (CA) came up empty, Sarah Hunt will lead a collaborative effort with assistant coaches to guide the highly successful Charger program this coming spring.
Hunt will pull double duty this spring as the newly minted CA athletic director and head coach of a Charger track and field program that has multiple individual state titles the past five years, culminating in the school’s first overall boys state title in 2022. The boys’ team nearly defended their Division IV state title last spring under first year head coach Jess Barber. Barber is stepping down as head coach, but will assist Hunt with the high school and middle school programs along with Mitch Hunt and Tim Cunningham. Hunt also hopes to have more volunteers come on board to help throughout the spring. Hunt took on the vacant A.D. position at CA three months ago with the winter sports season already underway. The Greensboro native has coaching experience in both girls’ and boys’ tennis at the Division I level in Utah, capturing a state title along with multiple regional championships.
Practices started this week, with the high school season set to kick off in mid-April weather permitting.
