FEMA Extends Aid Deadline

VERMONT – Vermonters affected by the July 9-11 storm that caused major flooding in many parts of the state now have until Nov. 25 to apply for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The original deadline was set for Oct. 21, but the extension, announced in a Tuesday press release from FEMA, gives residents in seven counties more time to seek aid. It applies to Addison, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Lamoille, Orleans and Washington counties.

For people living in Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties who were affected by a second round of storms on July 29-31, the original deadline, Nov. 25, remains unchanged.

The individual assistance program helps cover recovery expenses not met by insurance, including temporary housing, home repairs, and damaged privately-owned roads and bridges.

FEMA is urging residents affected by the severe weather to apply as soon as possible. Vermonters affected by both July storms must submit separate applications for each event, according to the press release.

To apply for the program, Vermonters can register on FEMA’s disaster assistance website or call the helpline at (800) 621-3362.
