HARDWICK – The new flag that flies daily in front of Hazen Union was presented to the school two weeks ago by Saint John de Crevecouer chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In anticipation of Veterans Day. DAR members Mary Metcalf, Elaine Bellavance and Laura Benjamin brought the flag to the high school. It was one of seven flags flown over the U.S. Capital and given to high schools in the Northeast Kingdom.

Metcalf spoke of the enduring values represented by the flag. Principal Jason DiGuilio, custodian Clarence Wheeler, and retired Hazen teacher Mike Metcalf spoke of the value of their service experiences in fostering civic responsibility, educational excellence and patriotism in our culture – reminding the morning assembly of the certainty of public participation in securing blessings of liberty across generations and time.

At the close of the brief remarks, the flag was presented to the Hazen Union Student Council President Sadie Gann and the assembly reconvened in front of the school for the first flag-raising of the new standard on the 55 foot flagpole.
