Protection from Emerald Ash Borers Planned

HARDWICK – In 2024 The Center for an Agricultural Economy (CAE) learned there are a couple of stands of black ash on the Atkins Field property that have not yet been attacked by emerald ash borers.

This variety of tree is the one traditionally used by Abenaki basket makers and is a threatened species, with the pest seen as near as Cabot. Once these bugs arrive, they typically decimate the black ash trees.

The CAE is working on a plan to treat many of these trees in hopes of protecting them. The organization will work with Joanne Garton, the technical assistance coordinator for Vermont Urban and Community Forestry.

The organization hopes to connect with tribe members to host an event sometime next year for anyone who wants to learn more about black ash trees and basket making.

There is potential to harvest one of the trees at Atkins Field for making baskets.
