BURLINGTON – Records were nearly broken in perfect conditions for the 2025 M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon (VCM) over the weekend.
Boston’s Ryan Eiler (39 yrs old) crossed the finish line first on Sunday, missing out on the all-time record by a single second with a time of 2:17:04. Chris Gish (26) of Jeffersonville topped all Vermont runners with an impressive runner-up finish, nearly four minutes behind Eiler. Pennsylvania’s Margaret Vido (34) was the top female finisher, dusting the field by over seven-and-a-half minutes with a time of 2:41:12. Twenty-six-year-old Hayley Collins of Connecticut took home runner-up honors. South Burlington high school alum (2013) Sarah Shiman was the top Vermont female runner to cross the line. Sam Montclair, Nathan Stine (Burlington), and Boston’s Jack Leitch rounded out the top five overall finishers.
Greensboro’s Colton Niemi (23) was the top local runner to finish on Sunday, posting a top 25 finish in his male 24-and-under age division (151 competitors) with a time of 3:03:17. Niemi was a standout on the pitch for the Hazen Union soccer team, winning 12 games and making a deep playoff run his senior season. Craftsbury Common’s Catee Castle (24), Adrienne Epstein (35), and Wolcott’s Jessia Boutin (38) also laid claim to one of the more than 1,500 finishers on Sunday. Twenty-year-old Margaret Fischer of St. Johnsbury posted an impressive ninth place finish among all female competitors with a time of 3:07:10.
The VCM is an annual marathon that winds through the city of Burlington, produced by RunVermont, a nonprofit organization committed to promote running in Vermont. Michael Khobotov still holds the all-time VCM record with a time of 2:17:03, set in 2001.
