PLAINFIELD – Town Clerk Bram Towbin said, “Plainfield Municipal tax bills were mailed yesterday,” in a social media post on July 17.
“The municipal budget, approved by voters at town meeting, went up by roughly 3%. Given the catastrophic floods of the last two years the select board and other town officials have worked diligently at containing costs. The state mandated property reappraisal increased the value of most properties but the municipal tax rate went down significantly (from 1.0665 to 0.6006) Unfortunately most households will be paying more. The amount varies due to a combination of factors (homestead declaration, income, veteran status.)
“The bulk of your tax bill (the last 2 of the 3 payments) goes to fund education. Plainfield town officials do not control school spending.
“The state of Vermont determines how the value of your houses are assessed, not the town. Municipal officials do not make the rules. In addition, the state regulates the state payment. If you have concerns about that figure please contact the Vermont Tax Department. Education tax related questions should be directed to either the state delegation or the Twinfield School. Town officials will be happy to answer questions regarding the municipal portion of your bill. Please be respectful. We are all working very hard.”
