Slightly Warmer Air Will Arrive

Share article

HARDWICK – As expected, the past several days have been marked by a warm-up in temperatures that led to mixed precipitation at times on Thursday and Friday, with the primary precipitation type being rain as temperatures warmed to the upper 30s and near 40 during the day. Overnight temperatures barely grazed the freezing mark area-wide.

At mid-elevations, such as Walden Heights and North Greensboro-East Craftsbury, four to six inches of the snowpack were lost during the thaw and accumulation of rain, leaving about seven to nine inches of snow. Lower elevations are hanging on to a couple of inches, although the lack of snow shut down part of the Sno-Flake Ridge Runners snowmobile trail network over the weekend. Other trail networks reported notably thin snow cover in spots.

Our first sign of cooling came in overnight Saturday night into Sunday, coinciding with a light dusting of snow. The temperature fell below freezing Sunday morning in Greensboro, with a report of 29 degrees. Temperatures continued to drop throughout the day as a storm system passed to our south, with plowable accumulations missing northern sections.

High pressure and seasonal temperatures give way to an approaching system from the north that will feature an influx of slightly warmer air as we head into Wednesday night and Thursday. Precipitation will develop from northwest to southeast on Thursday afternoon, and feature intermittent rain and snow showers, switching back to scattered snow showers Thursday night. The cold front associated with the system will cross Vermont from west-to-east on Friday, ushering in cooler temperatures as we head into the weekend. Some snow showers linger Friday night,  but end by Saturday morning to give us a weekend full of sunshine with high pressure again overhead. Here are the details of the forecast:

Wednesday: Partly cloudy. High: 29. Low: 20.

Thursday: Cloudy. Rain and snow showers developing by early afternoon, turning to all snow showers by evening. Snow accumulation of a dusting to one inch. High: 32. Low: 24.

Friday: Cloudy. Scattered snow showers throughout the day. Snow accumulation of a dusting to two inches. High: 28. Low: 14.

Saturday: Mostly sunny. High: 25, Low: 5.

Sunday: Partly cloudy. High: 22. Low: 6.
