MARSHFIELD – Vermont State Parks offers a free, guided hike at Big Deer Mountain in the Groton State Forest on New Year’s Day, January 1. Guide Danielle Schneider, Vermont State Parks regional operations manager, will lead the hike that leaves at 9.30 a.m. from the New Discovery State Park winter parking area at 4239 Vt. Rte. 232 in Marshfield.
This is a moderate hike up Big Deer Mountain from the New Discovery winter parking area. The round-trip is two miles on mostly level ground with a steep ascent in the final 200 yards.
Depending on conditions, snow shoes and/or traction aids and, on hike day, dress for the weather and bring snowshoes if the snow is deep and micro-spikes or traction aids in case of ice. Hiking poles are recommended.
Bring appropriate beverages and snacks.

The state is partnering with the Green Mountain Club, the Otter Creek Audubon Society and South Hero Land Trust to make First-Day Hikes a success.
