Rain Ahead; Sunny and Cool Weekend

Share article

EAST HARDWICK – We are closing out another week with minimal, if any, rainfall across our forecast area. A few rain gauges reported totals of a trace from scattered showers that fell on Friday afternoon. Those clouds hung out longer than previously anticipated, with a couple of sprinkles during the first half of Saturday and gradual clearing by Sunday. That weather is typical of a fall day around here.

In case you’re wondering how this stacks up compared to a typical September, we’re running at about a third of the precipitation totals we normally see at this point. A few weather stations are reporting mildly dry conditions at this time, with enough of a warm-air influence holding on to see a few days with highs in the 80s.

A brief pause in our precipitation-free streak begins today, September, 25, as a frontal system approaches from the Ohio Valley. This will bring scattered showers, with a transition to a steadier rain by afternoon and evening. Temperature ranges will also be narrower at this time, with highs in the 60s and lows in the upper 40s/low 50s. The front occludes and another round of showers looks likely as we move into Thursday, with possibly a rumble of thunder. That activity slowly subsides, with some sprinkles and clouds remaining on Friday. It will be cool and sunny on Saturday, with a slight warming trend to wrap up the weekend. This is all thanks to another high-pressure system hanging out over the northeast.

There’s lots of rubber stamping here, but this blocking high deflects Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine to our south and west. We will, yet again, miss out on the torrential rainfall from a storm that looks to turn into Hurricane Helene. Probably better for the foliage, as it is just starting to pop. Now, the forecast:

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely, then rain likely by afternoon. High: 62. Low: 51.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers, with an isolated rumble of thunder. High: 63. Low: 46.

Friday: Partly cloudy. Scattered sprinkles during the day. High: 65. Low: 44.

Saturday: Mostly sunny. High: 67. Low: 40.

Sunday: Mostly sunny. High: 71. Low: 41.
