A community welcome party is being held at the house on Saturday morning, July 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. Organized as a “pounding” by Pastor Ed Sunday-Winters at the Greensboro United Church of Christ, he will bless the house as completion of the project is celebrated.
“Pounding” is a 19th-century Christian tradition for welcoming new ministers. Congregants would bring a donation of a pound of food to help fill the pantry. Pastor Sunday-Winters has adapted that tradition for the home’s new residents.
All are invited to attend, with or without a pound of food. Coffee and donuts will be served.

The Greensboro Initiative was formed in 2023 in response to the shortage of affordable housing in the area and the high cost of renovating and operating existing older homes. A small group of Greensboro residents decided to actively endeavor to build affordable homes for mid-income families seeking to live here. Following two years of developing a working relationship with Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity, land search and acquisition, construction planning, and fundraising, ground was broken at the first site in the Bend in Apr 2025.
The energy-efficient homes were finished on budget and on time. Members of the Greensboro Initiative Steering Committee are currently searching for a building site, with a healthy Evergreen Fund in place to start the next project. Contact Kent Hanson ([email protected]) with any information on possible building sites.
