BOSTON, Mass. — The St. Johnsbury Academy (SJA) 4x800m relay team broke the Vermont State Record by 8 seconds last month at the New Balance Nationals.
Emmett Johnson, Isaac Lenzini, James Hatch, and Andrew Thornton-Sherman smashed the state record with a time of 7:52.82. In a field of 207 competitors, Thornton-Sherman also finished 9th overall in the 800m event with a time of 1:51.42. Johnson (Cross-Country) and Thornton-Sherman (Track & Field) are the reigning Vermont Gatorade Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. The dynamic duo look primed to lead the Hilltoppers to an unprecedented fifth straight division track and field title later this spring.

Jessica Thornton-Sherman takes over the reins of the legendary Hilltopper program this season, built by the late great Chip Langmaid. The legendary coach guided 29 teams in three different sports seasons to Division I state titles at SJA before tragically passing away last June. Langmaid will be inducted into the Vermont Principals Association Hall of Fame next month.
