Hazen students embark on a service-learning trip to Panama through Squads Abroad

Seven Hazen Union High School students and two chaperones prepare to depart from Boston Logan airport for Panama on June 3 (from left), Ursa Goldenrose (grade 10), Matthias Patoine (grade 10), Marina Smith (grade 9), Kay Freedy (world language teacher), Trevor Smith (grade 9), Evan Chartier (global citizenship teacher), Nate Hayden (grade 10), Lucian Jurkewieczk (grade 9), Sophia Foster (grade 11). They are embarking on a service-learning trip through Squads Abroad and its parent organization, Global Brigades. They will spend their mornings partnering with a primary school in rural Panama to support health and educational initiatives identified by the local community. The students will have time to explore local sights and culture through workshops and excursions, using and improving language and cultural skills.
