ST. JOHNSBURY – Catamount Arts and the St. Johnsbury Town Band invite musicians and music students of all ages and experience to this year’s Make Music Day, June 21, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Catamount Arts garden lot at 115 Eastern Avenue. This year’s celebration will consist of two parts, both of which encourage participation for a spontaneous community music-making experience.
All players are welcome, no tickets and no rehearsals necessary. Bring a instrument and a music stand. Music will be provided, and St. Johnsbury Band’s Assistant Director Kirsten Harter will conduct. The event will run from 2 to 2:30 p.m.
“I hope band students from all over the region will consider coming to Make Music Day and join in on some Sousa marches,” says Catamount Arts Community Liaison Andrea Otto. “A conductor will lead the musicians, but the point isn’t a rehearsed concert. The point is to encourage folks to bring their instruments and join in.
“If you used to play in a school band, if you’ve got a clarinet gathering dust in your closet, whether you last played 20 years or 20 minutes ago, you’re invited,” Otto adds.
Part Two of St. Johnsbury Make Music Day, “In One A-Chord,” is a strum-along led by local folk musicians Abby and Carl Johnson, Tom Stamp, and Jess Simpson. Community members are encouraged to bring instruments and play along for a large community jam session. The strum-along jam is expected to run from about 2:45 to 4 p.m.
