SOUTH BURLINGTON – The 2024 No-Till and Cover Crop Conference will address many of the challenges farmers faced in 2023 due to extreme wet weather and flooding leading to severe crop losses. The annual conference will take place February 22, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Burlington from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., hosted by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension’s Northwest Crops and Soils Program and Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture Team. The conference features a full slate of speakers and an exhibitors’ fair.
Morning speakers will include Rob Myers, University of Missouri, on measuring cover crop success; Heather Darby, UVM Extension, on integrating cover crops into soybean systems; and Humberto Blanco, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, on strategic tillage in no-till systems.
Jon Patterson and Kirsten Workman will give a lunch-time presentation on the 2024 North American Manure Expo. Patterson operates Patterson Farms Inc., a sixth-generation dairy farm in Auburn, N.Y. Workman leads extension programming and applied research for Cornell’s PRO-DAIRY program.
The afternoon program gets underway with a talk by Scott Potter on precision manure management. Potter is a custom applicator with Dairy Support Services Company in central New York.
Nick Warren, University of New Hampshire, will discuss cover crop seeding. Joshua Faulkner, UVM, will share a research update on field edge monitoring studies in Vermont. The agenda also includes a panel of farmers on their experiences with establishing and renovating forage stands with no-till practices.
