July busy month for Hazen Wildcat hoops

HARDWICK – Wildcat head coach Aaron Hill’s 25th Annual Hazen Hoop Camp is just around the corner, on the heels of the 18th edition of the Hazen Summer League that tipped off earlier this month with a full slate of area teams.

Hill’s Hazen Union varsity boys program will hang another Division III State Championship banner this coming winter, the seventh in his 27 years on the sidelines. Still in his early fifties, Hill’s 450 career wins are the most of any active high school basketball coach in the state. His annual camp will run from July 13-17 at the Hazen Union gymnasium. Hill, his coaching staff, along with present and past players from both the Wildcat and Lady Cat championship teams, will be in attendance. The Hazen girls varsity squad captured its second Division III State Championship in the last three years this past March. It marked the first time in school history that both programs won state titles in the same season. The camp for grades 3-6 will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Grades 7-9 will follow from 1 to 4 p.m. Hill’s camp has hosted nearly 200 campers combined the past two summers. There is a small cost to participate.

Local hoopers have been back on the hardwood for two weeks now in the state-renowned Hazen Summer League. Both Hill and Wildcat junior varsity coach Adam Gann are once again coaching teams from Hazen, made up of high schoolers, middle schoolers and alumni. The Spaulding Alumni are three-time defending champions, defeating the Average Joes last year to cap off only the third undefeated season in league history. A local team from Peoples Academy will be competing in the league for a second straight summer. All games are played at the Hazen Union gymnasium on Monday and Wednesday nights through the first week of August. Tip-off time is 6 p.m.

Hazen hoopers will also be in attendance at the St. Johnsbury Academy Team Camp on July 11-12. Hill’s program is also scheduled to attend the Profile, N.H., Team Camp for a second straight year on July 18 for a trio of games. They wrap up a busy month with a trip to the Castleton Team Camp on July 25-26.

The Cat Den has been available for individual skill workouts since mid-June and will remain open through August 5. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
