ST. JOHNSBURY – The Caledonia West 10-12 Little League All-Stars’ run came to an end at the hands of Connecticut Valley North (CVN) last week in the 2026 Vermont District 4 Baseball Tournament. After pummeling Lake Region 18-5 in the first game of the loser’s bracket on last Sunday, Cal West’s bats were silenced by CVN on Wednesday in a 3-1 loss.
Levi Newell scattered four hits, issued zero walks and fanned 11 over 5.0 innings of work to earn the win for CVN. Daniel Barton was the hard-luck loser for Cal West in a classic pitching duel, striking out seven over four and two-thirds innings of work. CVN took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, stringing together three of their six hits of the afternoon. Barton ripped a double to score Easton Tatro in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1. CVN added an insurance run in the fifth, and Cal West left the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. CVN fell to Tri-Valley 4-3 in the finals of the loser’s bracket Friday night.
The Cal West Little Leaguers were made up of Hardwick’s own Gavin Hay, Henry Upson, Murray Meyer, Colton Daigneault, Easton Tatro and Daniel Barton. Paden Withers, Elliot Kendall, Wyatt Mantius, Wade White, Ethan Webster and Gage White rounded out the roster from Danville. Withers led the team in hits for the tournament with fiver, Upson had four hits and four RBI, Hay drove in three runs on a pair of hits and Kendall scored four runs. Cal West was coached by Opie Hudson, assisted by Jared White and Derrick Tatro.
“You always want to go further in these tournaments. We had some opportunities; we just couldn’t string enough hits together against some good pitching. All these kids will continue to play fall ball together. They are a humble group of good ball players and very coachable,” said Upson.
