RICHFORD – The Twinfield-Cabot-Danville (CCSU) girls’ soccer team made it two in a row last week, shutting down Richford to earn a huge Mountain League road win.
Hazel Abetti scored the eventual game-winner in the first half and goalkeeper Ida Astick did the rest as Caledonia United shut down Richford 1-0 on the road last Wednesday. Abetti buried a Carley Mancini feed with 10 minutes to go in the first half and first year keeper Ida Astick turned away 20 shots to earn her first career shutout.
“Ida came up huge! A 20-save shutout is always impressive, but several of those stops were stellar diving saves off of very dangerous looking shots,” said head coach Spencer Morse.
Multi-sport senior star and All-Mountain League First Teamer Kyrielle Deuso put 80 minutes of pressure on the CCSU defense, but Astick and sophomore defender Cora Abetti were up to the task. Deuso also eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark for Richford’s basketball team last winter as just a junior and led the Falcon’s softball team to a Division IV state championship this past June. It is Astick’s third match in net for Caledonia United, replacing veteran keeper Leah Klark who was instrumental in their historic playoff run last fall with the program’s first Division III postseason win.
“Cora had the task of marking Deuso and did a fine job of keeping most of her looks from outside, while forcing her to shoot under constant pressure. The few times that Deuso was able to penetrate for more dangerous looks, Ida came up big every time, earning her first shutout,” said Morse.
Vanessa Tessier was also solid for Richford, making four stops in the loss. The Lady Falcons fell to 0-3 on the season after losing a tight 1-0 match to Division III powerhouse BFA-Fairfax on Friday. Morse’s Cal United squad moved up to sixth in the current Division IV standings, with Rivendell Academy and West Rutland setting the pace at the top of the division with a combined 7-0 record.
CCSU will look to keep the momentum going this week with a trip to division rival Blue Mountain on Wednesday before welcoming Division III Oxbow to town on Friday for a tough Mountain League match-up. They will stay on the road next Monday for a match-up against Paine Mountain.
