Moodie Qualifies for States
BRANDON – Hazen Union’s Brendan Moodie led the way last week in sectionals for the Wildcat golf team, qualifying for the state tournament with a stellar round at Neshobe Country Club.
Moodie fired a team low round of 82 last Tuesday, good enough for a top 10 finish in Division II, punching his ticket to represent the Wildcats in the state championships held at Burlington Country Club this coming week. The multi-sport senior has earned medalist honors six times for Hazen since transferring from Peoples Academy his sophomore season. Second year head coach Andy Hunt had a young team around Moodie this season and is optimistic in growing the program in the coming years.
“Brendan has worked hard on his game over the summer at Orleans CC and during our practices this fall. It was a long day and a lot of travel, but it was a good day and Hazen golf is going in the right direction. Our rookie sophomore Braydon Stratton gained valuable experience in his first qualifier attempt, including a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole today. We had some young players make a lot of progress this season, but we need more kids interested in the program going forward.
Any students from Craftsbury Academy or Hazen who are interested in playing middle school or varsity golf next season can contact me or our AD Aaron Hill. Benefits include free golf during the season at our home course, Mountain View CC in Greensboro, as well as free instruction,” said Hunt.
Two-time defending Division II state champion Lucas Politano (Otter Valley) earned medalist honors with a 2-under round of 70. Hartford’s Thomas Thorburn fired a 75 to place second.
Moodie tees off at 11:30 a.m., Thursday at Burlington Country Club.
Circosta Leads Norwich at Cadet Invitational
NORTHFIELD – Greensboro’s Leo Circosta had another top five finish last week as his Norwich University cross-country team dominated the Cadet Invitational for a second straight year.
The talented freshman and former Craftsbury Academy (CA) state champion finished third overall with a time of 28:26.40, just behind teammate Matheu Dettenrieder, who has nabbed back-to-back GNAC Rookie of the Week honors.
Circosta helped Norwich win the Castleton Invitational back in August with an individual runner-up finish in his first collegiate race. The Cadets placed four runners in the top 10 on Friday to win the nine-school competition going away.
The meet served as a preview for the upcoming GNAC Championships which will be held at Norwich on November 2.
Circosta and the Cadets will be back in action this Saturday at Westfield State University for the James Earley Invitational.
