LVRT Open with some Closures, Detours

Share article

VERMONT – The Vermont Agency of Transportation announced in late May that the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail (LVRT) is now open for summer fun, but portions of the trail are closed due to prior year’s flooding, with detours in place.

At 93 miles long, the LVRT is the longest rail trail in New England and connects 18 towns from St. Johnsbury to Swanton. The LVRT is a four-season, multi-purpose recreation and transportation corridor for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling.

Closed segments are noted in red on the LVRT map at railtrails.vermont.gov/trails/lamoille-valley-rail-trail and are closed to all trail users. Some damaged segments remain open to trail users, but they should proceed with caution. The caution segments are noted in yellow on the LVRT map.

Trail users should use caution between milepost (MP) 30.9 and 31.1 in East Hardwick,

The trail is closed from Mt. Vernon St. in St. Johnsbury at MP 1.05 to Danville MP 6.6 with no detour posted

Another closure begins at Kittredge Road in West Danville at MP 13.37 to MP 14.05 near Joe’s Pond. A signed detour of approximately 0.65 miles is available to bypass the closure, from the Kittredge Road crossing near MP 13.37 south to Wightman Road, then west past Kingdom Equipment and Trailers, and then northwest up a short access road back to the trail.

A closure at Needle Eye Road in Morristown at MP 49.85 to Morey Road in Hyde Park at MP 51.35 has a signed detour of approximately 1.5 miles. From MP 49.85 at Needle Eye Bridge, take the driveway west/down to Needle Eye Road. Take Needle Eye Rd west/northwest for 35 miles. It will terminate into Cadys Falls Road. Continue north on Cadys Falls Road for 80 miles. Turn left/west on Morey Road. Follow Morey Road for 35 miles past the LVRT Hyde Park Trailhead and rejoin the LVRT at MP 51.35. Detour Map.

The Hyde Park Trailhead is closed to trail users.
