AREA COUNTIES – A tornado watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), Thursday, June 18, at 9:58 a.m., for Caledonia, Essex, Lamoille, Orleans and Washington Counties in this area was in effect through 3 p.m. that day. None of the towns covered by The Gazette were specifically listed in the watch.
While area weather was unsettled Thursday, the two confirmed tornadoes were well south of this area, with no injuries reported.
The Burlington NWS office reported on Saturday, “Our survey team today confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes from June 18, with one located in South Lincoln and one located in Bridgewater/Woodstock.”
The tornado in S. Lincoln, with peak winds estimated at 105 mph, occurred at 1:31 p.m., lasting two minutes and traveling .31 miles, with a maximum width of 200 yards, said the NWS. It touched down in the woods and crossed into a ravine where damage trailed off.
The Woodstock tornado, at 2:35 p.m., had estimated peak winds of 100 mph, traveling 1.34 miles in four minutes at a maximum width of 550 yards. It traveled along the Vt. Rte. 4 valley uprooting and snapping numerous trees, warping solar panels, damaging a metal shed and taking off some roofing before traveling up a hill where it lifted, said the NWS report.
