NORTHFIELD – The Twinfield-Cabot girls’ basketball team moved into the top five in the current Division IV standings with impressive wins over Northfield and Winooski last week, improving to 7-2 on the season.

Jorja Washburn led the offense with a game-high 13 points to lead the Lady Trojans to a 39-25 road win over Northfield last Thursday.

Kendall Fowler and Alice McLane rounded out a balanced scoring attack with 11 apiece in the win.

Natalie Higgins paced Northfield with 10 in the loss as they fell to 0-9 on the season.
It was a good bounce-back win for first year head coach Jack Whalen and his program, after a disappointing 47-26 road loss to an 8-1 Williamstown team last weekend. It was the first real litmus test for Whalen’s upstart squad, but offensive struggles and a 19-7 run by the Lady Blue Devils turned a tight game into a rout by the fourth quarter. Williamstown has ripped off eight straight wins since their loss to Thetford Academy to open the season and currently sits in the No. 2 spot in the Division IV standings.

“We had to reschedule Williamstown from earlier in the week and we knew it was going to be a tough game against one of the top teams in our division. I’m very proud of these girls and everything that we have done to this point is together. That will always be our attitude as the season continues and we’ll keep taking everything one game at a time,” said Whalen.

Washburn kept the hot hand on Saturday, pouring in a career-high 23 points to help the Lady Trojans race past Winooski at home 55-37.

Fowler had another strong game with 13 and McLane was rock solid inside once again with eight.

The loss dropped the Lady Spartans to 1-6 and thirteenth in the current Division III standings. Twinfield-Cabot leapfrogged Proctor and MSJ in the Division IV standings to claim the fifth spot. Long Trail sits in the top spot at 9-0, followed by Williamstown, West Rutland, and Arlington.

“I really want our identity to be that we are a tough team. We played that way this week. I’ve been getting on this group about scoring more in transition and we are starting to do that very well and we’ll continue to work on it. If we continue to play good defense it will lead to easier offensive opportunities for us. I am so proud of how this team continues to take on challenges head on. The next two weeks present a lot of games in a short amount of time, so we’ll continue to put in the work and not celebrate too much,” said Whalen.

The Lady Trojans welcomed Blue Mountain to town on Tuesday night before a Division III road clash with a red-hot Hazen Union team on Thursday. They wrap up a busy week with a rare trip to Division I Mount Anthony on Saturday evening.
