WELLS RIVER – The Danville boys’ basketball team swept Blue Mountain and Northfield last week, improving to 14-4 and reclaiming the No. 2 spot in the current Division IV standings.

Andrew Guinard poured in 20 points to lead Danville to a 52-40 road win over Blue Mountain last Wednesday. Guinard buried six three-pointers on the night, giving him 12 over the last two games.

Andrew Joncas chipped in with 15, including a pair of threes of his own in the win.

Kason Blood paced the Bucks with 20 in the loss.

Evan Melen (10 points) and Anthoni Guinard (nine points) were the high scorers for the Bears in their 60-36 road win over Northfield Friday night.

Joncas added eight as Danville leapfrogged Grace Christian for the No. 2 spot behind West Rutland with its third straight win.

The Bears hosted Oxbow on Monday and will welcome Stowe to town on Friday to close out the regular season on Senior Night.

Vikes Run Unbeaten Streak to Seven

LYNDONVILLE – The Lyndon Institute boys’ hockey team led by senior defensive captain Andrew Menard of Hazen Union, bested St. Johnsbury Academy and Milton last week to improve to 11-2-2 on the season.

Their perfect week moved the Vikings up to the No. 2 spot in the current Division II standings behind top-seeded Colchester. They will look to keep their streak going this week with a pair of home games against Missisquoi Valley on Wednesday and Burlington on Friday night.

Menard and his fellow seniors will be honored on Senior Night next Monday as they welcome Northfield to town to wrap up the regular season.

Thornton-Sherman Breaks Through Four-Minute Barrier

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former St. Johnsbury Academy (SJA) track star and Vermont Gatorade Runner of the Year Evan Thornton-Sherman broke through the four-minute mile barrier last week running for the University of Mississippi.

Thornton-Sherman graduated from SJA in 2022, but not before leading the boys’ track and field team to back-to-back state championship titles, while setting six state records along the way. His brother Andrew, along with Andrew Bugbee, made it a three-peat for the Hilltopper track and field team this past spring.

Thornton-Sherman finished third in Nashville last Friday, crossing the line with a time of 3:59.81, joining former Hilltopper Dage Minors and Norwich’s Andrew Wheating as the only Vermonters in history to accomplish the feat. This is Thornton-Sherman’s first season with Ole Miss after a year plus of competing in the America East at the University of Maine.

Howard Steps Down as Wildcat Coach

HARDWICK – After the best three-year stretch of varsity baseball in school history, Spencer Howard is stepping down as the head coach of the Hazen Union baseball program.

Howard took over a Wildcat program in 2019 that hadn’t had a winning season or won a playoff game in 12 years. He helped end those droughts by developing a dynamic freshman class (Tyler Rivard, Lyle Rooney, Jadon Baker, James Montgomery) that led Hazen back to their first state title game at Centennial Field since 2007. Howard and the late great Dan Hill are the only two Hazen and Hardwick Academy alumni to both have played and coached in a championship game. Howard steps away with a 46-24 career record and will coach his kids at the youth level this summer.
