Lady Trojans Look to Finish Strong

MARSHFIELD – After falling to a pair of divisional powers in Williamstown and Richford last week, the Twinfield-Cabot girls’ basketball team will look to improve on their 11-7 record with a strong finish to their regular season.

Gracie Engelhard knocked down 4 three-pointers to help Williamstown escape Marshfield with a 41-36-win last Tuesday. Engelhard finished with 12 points on the night, leading the Lady Blue Devils to an 18-16 lead at the break.

Jorja Washburn kept Twinfield-Cabot within seven points with eight minutes to play with a team-high 12 points of her own.

Alice McLane added 10 as the home team made it a one possession game several times down the stretch but couldn’t get over the hump.

Hannah Spencer chipped in with 11 points for Williamstown as they improved to 14-2 with their fifth straight win.

Lone senior Alice McLane was honored by the Lady Trojans for her outstanding high school career on Senior Night.

“It was great to see the way Alice carries herself on and off the court get appreciated. I’m so glad we’re able to have success as a team in her senior year and I’m so proud of her. I was very proud of how the girls competed against a Williamstown team that we lost to by 21 earlier in the season. We had a game plan and stuck to it very well. They shot the ball better than we did and that was the difference in the game,” said head coach Jack Whalen.

Sophomore Kyrielle Deuso burned the Lady Trojans for a second time this season, pouring in 21 points to lead Richford to a 65-23 home win over the weekend.

Sierra Derby punished Twinfield-Cabot inside for 19 more and Maddie Smith chipped in with nine in the win.

McLane led the Lady Trojans with eight in the loss. Richford swept the season series behind 47 combined points from Deuso and at 14-4, moved up to the third spot in the current Division III standings.

“We just had a tough game against Richford over the weekend. We didn’t play well as a team and when frustration kicked in, it just snowballed from there. That is a good team that we faced, and they came out ready to play from the start. We got in our own way a lot, but I know the girls will bounce back. We are very excited to finish the regular season strong and make a playoff push. It all starts with a great practice on Monday!” said Whalen.

Whalen’s squad finished up the regular season at home against Stowe on Tuesday looking for their twelfth win of the season. They are firmly locked into the fifth spot in the current Division IV standings and have secured the program’s first winning season in over a decade in Whalen’s first year on the sidelines.
