Hurricanes Deny Vikes Trip to Gutterson

LYNDONVILLE – After handling Stowe in the quarterfinals last week, the Lyndon Institute (LI) boys’ hockey team couldn’t match the speed of third-seeded Hartford in the Division II Final Four Hockey Tournament at Fenton Chester Arena.

Members of the Craftsbury Academy bowling team who took medals at the state bowling tournament in Colchester were Matt Wilcox, Jacob Marquis and Jason Brown.

Alex Giroux recorded a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Vikings to a dominant 5-1 quarterfinal win over Stowe last Wednesday. Ben West added a goal and an assist as LI advanced to their first Final Four in five years.

Hartford erased an early goal deficit with five unanswered scores, ending the Vikings 13 game unbeaten streak with a 7-2 semifinal win on Saturday. Adam Dusek gave the home favorites an early lead in the first period, but the speed of the Hurricanes would not be denied over the next 35 minutes of play. Hazen Union senior defensive captain Andrew Menard and junior Max Fortmann were key contributors to the Vikings success this winter, as their season comes to an end at 16-3-3.

Hartford has gotten hot at the right time, reeling off three straight wins, and faced top seeded Colchester for the Division II State Championship at Gutterson Field House on Tuesday.

Charger Bowlers Bow Out in Second Round of States

COLCHESTER – The Craftsbury Academy bowling team capped off a successful winter in their second season as a varsity program with a first round win over White River Valley, before falling to Essex in the second round of the Vermont High School Bowling Team State Tournament at Spare Time in Colchester.

The Chargers swept White River 4-0 in the first round of Baker format competition, winning in a bowl off in the fourth game behind the scores of Jason Brown and Jacob Marquis. After putting up a valiant fight against second seeded Essex, the Chargers ended their season with a 3-1 loss to the Hornets in the second round. Raz Mille, Kosmos Gletos, and Andrew Royan rounded out the CA roster led by Matt Wilcox, Brown, and Marquis. Brown finished third in the Individual State Tournament last week, with Marquis close behind in fourth, and Wilcox a respectable eighth. The trio all took home medals on Saturday for finishing top five statewide in average for their grade levels. Wilcox will roll the rock for the Chargers one more time next weekend at the Senior Classic in Claremont, N.H.

“Overall it was a great day and a good experience for some of the younger bowlers who haven’t been in this atmosphere before. States is intense and experiencing this level of competition as young bowlers is only going to help our program going forward,” said head coach Ashley Gravel.

Lions Knock off Bears to Win Title

BARRE – After cruising past Williamstown in the semifinal round at the Barre Auditorium last week, Grace Christian ended the Danville boys’ basketball team’s eight game win streak to capture the Division IV state championship.

In just its third year as a varsity program, Grace Christian muscled past the Bears 52-41 to claim their first state title over the weekend. Cooper Calkins poured in a season-high 18 points for the Bears, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an otherwise cold night from the field for the top seed. The Lions used balanced scoring and their size advantage to erase a four-point deficit at halftime, outscoring Danville 33-18 the final sixteen minutes. It was the third trip to the Final Four in five years for the Bears, who cut down the nets in 2019.
