HARDWICK – The Hardwick Academy/Hazen Union Alumni Association is tackling a number of projects heading into May and June.
First up for the HA/HU Alumni Association is a chicken barbecue fundraiser being held Spring Festival Weekend, Saturday May 25, at Atkins Field in Hardwick. This will be the second year the association has sponsored the chicken dinner. The fundraiser was a great success for the association in 2023.
The barbecue will be set up in a corner of Atkins Field from noon to 1:30 p.m. on that Saturday. Last year the association sold out of dinners, which was unfortunate for people who wanted to buy dinners the day of the event. They hope to have extra meals to support those last-minute needs this spring. There will also be better seating this year. Tickets are on sale now and the deadline to purchase them is May 15.
Board members are now selling tickets, including President Mike Clark, Vice President Gail Luther O’Brien, Secretary Dave Burnham and Treasurer Karen Hall, along with association board members Lorrie Curtis, Mary Jane Fradette, Debbie Brown and Pat Hussey.
Ryan Brown and Mario Fradette will be behind the grill once again this year.
For more information, or to purchase tickets, call Mary Jane Fradette at (802) 793-4764 or Debbie Brown at (802) 472-5088.
Alumni can inquire about tickets on the HA/HU Alumni Association Facebook page, a private membership group that now has over 1,100 followers. Any HA/HU alumni can join the page.
The alumni association will bring the alumni reunion back to Hardwick this summer. The reunion will be held on Saturday, June 22, at the Brochu Pavilion on 2244 West Hill Road in Hardwick. The reunion date had to be pushed back two weeks in order to secure the Brochu building. There will be plenty of seating and parking available, but alumni are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs.
The alumni reunion will open its doors around 11 a.m. for registration. A meal will be served, starting at noon and lasting until about 1:30 p.m. Cost of the meal is $20 per person and the reunion itself is free. The event should last most of the afternoon. Five-year classes will be honored and photographs will be taken. Other activities include an open mic period, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. The reunion is open to all classes.
Pre-register for the meal by completing the registration form. That should be done by the June 7 deadline.
The association will sponsor two $500 service awards for two graduating Hazen Union seniors. Last year’s awards were given in memory of Richard LeCours and Richard Brochu. This year both awards will be named in honor of Lorraine Hussey, a local historian, longtime downtown Hardwick business person and an HA Class of 1945 Valedictorian.
On Friday afternoon, June 21, the association will sponsor its Masters Memorial golf tournament as a fundraiser honoring many local golfers who have passed. The tournament is a nine-hole scramble at the Mountain View Country Club in Greensboro. Two tee times are available for foursomes to participate, the first group going out at 1 p.m. and the second group at 3:30 p.m. The event is open to all golfers. Cost is $35 to those walking the course and $45 for golfers using a cart.
A food truck from Mo’s BBQ in Plainfield will be at the event. The driving range will also be open free for participants. For more information on the event, contact Mike Clark ([email protected]), Dave Burnham ([email protected]) or Pat Hussey ([email protected]).
