CRAFTSBURY – Richford used a big first inning to make quick work of the Craftsbury Academy (CA) softball team last week, sending the Lady Chargers to their seventh straight loss starting this season.
Kyrielle Deuso has made a season out of facing CA this spring, as she drove in her seventeenth run against the Lady Chargers on Tuesday in a 16-3 road win for Richford. The multi-sport star junior went 2-3 with a triple and 5 RBI to power an eight-run first inning that put the game away early. Makayla Chagnon was equally as impressive, going 3-4 with a double and three more RBI. Adi Chagnon added two more hits, while scoring three times for Richford. Sophia Derby earned the five-inning victory, striking out eight on the day. Hazen’s Gracie Crown was a bright spot for CA, belting a two-run double. Richford kept pace with the contenders in the current Division IV standings, improving to 8-3 on the season.
CA has a trio of home games to get into the winner’s circle this week as they hosted Lamoille on Tuesday and will welcome Williamstown and Winooski to Dustan Field on Thursday and Saturday.
Track and Field Postponed
LYNDONVILLE – The Hazen Union and CA varsity track and field teams’ meet at Lyndon Institute was postponed last week due to lightning in the area.
The Chargers and Wildcats were back in action at North Country on Tuesday; qualifiers will take on the best of the best over the weekend at the Essex Invitational. The middle schoolers are scheduled to be back in competition on Thursday for their biggest meet of the season at Burlington High School.
Davis Powers Colchester
COLCHESTER – Zach Davis, son of former Craftsbury Academy great Jeff Davis, led his Colchester baseball team to a clean sweep of Essex and Burlington last week to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Davis struck out five to earn the win in a complete game effort on the mound and smashed a pair of homers to lead the Lakers to a 7-2 win over Essex on Thursday. He belted a triple in a 14-2 lopsided win over Burlington on Saturday. Colchester is currently ranked fifth in the Division I standings.
Davis is one of the best, if not the best high school baseball player in the state and has signed his letter of intent to Bryant University. He has announced plans to join the Vermont Lake Monsters this summer, joining former Peoples Academy great Ben Alekson on the roster. Alekson led the Wolves to three consecutive state titles and is having a stellar freshman season at Fairfield University.
Davis and the Lakers are scheduled to host BFA St. Albans on Thursday and S. Burlington on Saturday.
