St. Pierre Punches Her Ticket to Paris
EUGENE, Oregon – Richford High School alum Elle St. Pierre capped off a historic week for Vermont runners by securing spots in both the 5000m and 1500m on Team USA in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris later this month.
Last Monday, St. Pierre broke a 25-year-old U.S. Olympic Trial record with a time of 14:40.34 to edge Elise Cranny by .02 seconds to win the 5000m finals. On Sunday, St. Pierre also qualified in the 1500m finals, finishing third.
This will be the second trip to the Summer Olympics for the 29-year-old former UNH All-American, who finished tenth in the 1500m in Tokyo. St. Pierre will be riding a wave of momentum to capture her first Olympic medal later this month after winning a silver medal in the 3,000m at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade and capturing gold in the same event in Glasgow at Worlds this past March.
The Paris Olympic Games begin on July 26.
Thornton-Sherman Named Vermont’s top Track and Field Athlete
ST. JOHNSBURY – St. Johnsbury Academy’s (SJA) Andrew Thornton-Sherman was named the 2024 Vermont Gatorade boys track and field Player of the Year last week after guiding the Hilltoppers to their fourth straight Division I state title this past spring.
Thornton-Sherman capped off an incredible junior campaign last month by capturing individual state titles in the 1,500m, 300m hurdles, and SJA’s 4X400m relay team as the anchoring leg. He joins his brother Evan, who was a Vermont Gatorade winner in 2022 for the Hilltoppers. Last month at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at the University of Pennsylvania, Thornton-Sherman posted a fourth-place finish in the 800m (1:50.64), smashing his personal best time and own Vermont state record by a full second. He is ranked just outside of the top 10 in the 1,500m nationally and ranked 36th nationally in the 800m. He also joined his teammates Wilder Thomas, Daniel Carter, and Emmett Johnson in Philadelphia to place fourteenth out of 54 teams in the 1600m sprint medley relay.
Brueck Stands Alone as States Top Female Athlete
NORTH COUNTRY – North Country High School star Sabine Brueck added another top honor to her crowded trophy case last week as she was named 2024 Vermont Gatorade girls track and field Player of the Year.
Brueck also took home Vermont Gatorade honors in girls’ basketball this past winter surpassing 1,000 career points and leading the Lady Falcons to the division II state title game. The amazing junior won individual state titles for the North Country track and field team in both the 100m and 300m hurdles and broke her own state record (43.90 sec) in the 300m hurdle with a third-place finish at the New England Championships last month. Two weeks ago, she put a bow on one of the most incredible all-around high school sports seasons in Vermont history by setting a new state record with 5,755 points in the Vermont Decathalon State Championships.
