GREENSBORO – The 13th Annual Caspian Lake Challenge is set to kick off next weekend, with incentives to register early for the classic rolling loop around the historic lake that spans nearly seven miles.
The popular event will start at the ballfield in Greensboro at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 28. Those who register early by July 27 will save five dollars on their $20 race day ticket. You can register online at greensboroassociation.org.
The race will consist of a 6.8 mile run around Caspian Lake, along with an out and back 5k walk/run for competitors. There will be a laser etched collectible glass tumbler given to all male and female winners in eight different categories: under 13, 13-19, 20-29, 30-29, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and over 70. There will also be raffle prizes given out for randomly selected runners, along with ice cream and bananas for all competitors. Eric Hanson is the race director for this year’s competition.
“Win or not, you get your money’s worth out of the Caspian Lake Loop!” said Hanson.
Richards Narrowly Misses Playoff at Vermont-Am
BURLINGTON – Bryon Richards, son of Craftsbury Academy great Pete Richards, missed out on a potential five-way playoff last week by a single stroke in his attempt to defend his Vermont Amateur title at Burlington Country Club.
Richards finished the three-day tournament at even-par, shooting 70-72-71. He was coming into his title defense in good form, after capturing the Vermont Open at Lake Morey last month. Otter Valley senior Lucas Politano held off Walker Allen, Travis Russell, and Michael Walsh in a two-hole playoff to capture the title. Playing out of Ralph Myhre Golf Course, Politano is now in the U.S. Amateur field after already qualifying for the U.S. Junior Am with medalist honors last month.
Richards graduated from the University of Rhode Island URI) earlier this spring with a school record six individual tournament titles. The smooth lefty was the first ever Ram golfer to be named URI’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year. He intends to travel to Scottsdale, Arizona later this month to prepare for the professional ranks.
Mountaineers Stay on Top Behind Alekson
MONTPELIER – Former Peoples Academy (PA) star Ben Alekson continued to shine for his Vermont Mountaineer team last week, running his scoreless inning streak on the mound to 12-plus innings.
The big righty held the Danbury Westerner offense to only one hit over four innings of work on Friday in an 8-5 win at Montpelier Recreation Field. Alekson has allowed zero earned runs and only six hits over his last three starts, striking out 14 along the way. The Fairfield University sophomore hasn’t given up an earned run in almost a month, lowering his earned run average to 1.25. The Mountaineers improved to an NECBL best 22-8 and will be back in action in the capital city next Monday for a doubleheader against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks.
