GREENSBORO – The Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) sponsored a storytelling and book giveaway at Caspian Lake in Greensboro on July 18. This Greensboro Free Library (GFL) collaborative event featured local author Natalie Kinsey (-Warnock). Kinsey (-Warnock) told stories from her family history through the quilts that she made with her grandmother and with her children’s books. Kinsey (-Warnock)’s grandmother sewed all the quilts by hand and became so fast at it that she could sew an entire quilt in one week. Kinsey (-Warnock) has written over 20 children’s books and lives in West Glover. Her books highlight her life as well as those of her ancestors. She encouraged the children in the audience to find their family stories, stories worth writing down and retelling.

Through a grant the Greensboro Free Library will be hosting Kinsey (-Warnock) to offer her StoryKeepers workshop in the fall. To bring a school group or home-schooled children to these workshops, reach out to Greensboro Free Library Youth Librarian Emily Purdy at [email protected] or the library at (802) 533-2531.
As well as the storytelling presentation, CLiF offered each child two free books to take home and keep. There were four large boxes of book choices. Thirty-two children, ages 0-15, chose books.
(ed. note: Youth Librarian Emily Purdy says Natalie Kinsey-Warnock is beginning to use Natalie Kinsey as her name, thus the parentheses around Warnock.)
