HARDWICK – With Aaron Hill now the full-time athletic director at Hazen Union and Steve Welch hired last month to guide the athletic department at Craftsbury Academy (CA), the two schools will officially begin their athletic cooperative at both the middle school and high school levels this coming fall.

Charger athletics will continue offering cross-country to their student athletes this fall at both the middle and high school level. The varsity program has won the last four division III state championships under head coach Mike LeVangie. With his retirement, a new era begins under Maxfield English. English teaches at Hazen and recently bested the field at the 13th Annual Caspian Lake Challenge. The CA fall sports meeting and registration is scheduled for next Monday at 6:00pm at the high school.

Hazen will welcome CA student athletes into their girls’ and boys’ soccer programs at both the middle and high school levels later this month. Harry Besett will coach the Wildcat varsity boys’ team for the first time after a successful six-year stint guiding the Lady Cat program.

Jay Terrian, the new music teacher at CA this fall, will be the new  Hazen varsity girls’ coach, bringing decades of experience both playing and coaching.

Hazen will be welcoming CA student athletes into their varsity golf program this fall under head coach Andy Hunt.

A mandatory fall sports meeting for all student athletes in grades 7-12 at both schools will be held at the Hazen Auditorium at 6:00pm next Tuesday.

Wildcats Attend Lyndon Team Camp

LYNDONVILLE – Head coach Aaron Hill and his Wildcat basketball team completed their last camp of the season this past week at Lyndon Institute and will wrap up their summer hoops schedule by crowning a Hazen Summer League champion later this week.

The Wildcats posted wins against Twinfield-Cabot and CVU at the camp and lost by a bucket to CVU in Sunday’s tournament on a buzzer beater. The JV squad also lost a close hard-fought battle to Williamstown on Sunday. CVU took home tournament champion honors for the weekend.

“We played extremely well against CVU and gave them their toughest game of the tournament,” said Hill.

The Spaulding Alumni’s quest to defend their 2023 title started on Monday, with two semifinal matchups slated for Wednesday at 7:00pm. The Hazen Summer League Championship will tip-off on Thursday night at the Cat Den at 7:00pm.
