On August 14 Colin Mercier, of Hardwick, was arrested for an incident on July 14. the officer was on
patrol and saw an ATV driving through the cemetery. The officer recognized the operator as Mercier
whose license is criminally suspended. The officer activated his lights and siren to stop the vehicle. The
ATV proceeded onto South Main going south and refused to stop. The ATV was not displaying a license
plate or VASA decal. The ATV went up the ATV trail off Carey Road. Mercier also has conditions from
another case not to drive a motor vehicle. Several traffic tickets were issued for this incident also. Mercier
was cited into Caledonia Court on Sept. 9, at 8:30 a.m.
On July 29 at 9:40 a.m., there was a three-vehicle property damage accident on Main St. at Wolcott St. in
Hardwick Village. Kit Ferrand, of Irasburg was operating a 2014 Buick Enclave westward on Main St.
and had stopped at the Wolcott Street intersection. Kristen Lavine, of Craftsbury was operating a 2023
Ford F-150, was also westward on Main Street and had stopped behind Ferrand. Melissa Marshall, of
Calais, was operating a 2013 Toyota Prius and had been parked off the eastbound lane of Main St. and
made a U-turn to go westward on Main Street and had partially crossed the westward lane and stopped
behind Lavine. A tractor trailer unit was eastward on Wolcott Street, began making a left turn onto Main
Street and stopped. Ferrand figured that she was in the way of the truck making the turn, so she began
backing up. Lavine saw Ferrand backing up, so she began backing up and blowing her horn as she did not
want Ferrand backing into her. As Ferrand was backing up Marshall had either made her U-turn or was in
the process of doing so. The left rear bumper on Ferrand’s truck and the right front corner of Marshall’s
Prius came in contact causing damage to the Prius. It’s possible that the rear bumper of Ferrand’s Buick
and the front bumper of Lavine’s truck came in contact with each other. The only damage was to
Marshall’s Prius.
