WELLS RIVER – The Twinfield-Cabot-Danville (CCSU) girls’ soccer team ran their winning streak to four games last week with big wins over Blue Mountain and Oxbow, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Senior Sloane Morse scored twice to break open a tight game in the second half to lead Caledonia United to a 5-3 road win over Blue Mountain last Wednesday. The 2023 Vermont All-State selection also added an assist for a balanced offensive attack that has seen CCSU score 12 goals in their last four matches. Carley Mancini continued her scoring ways with a goal and an assist, Eliska Siebenbrunner and Hazel Abetti scored a goal apiece, and Chloe North chipped in with two assists in the win. Natalie Burroughs led Blue Mountain with a goal and an assist and Maya Christie and Addison Murray each tallied a goal, with Ava Kingsbury making 14 saves in the loss. Ida Astick turned away 9 shots for the CCSU defense.

“This was a hard-fought game by both teams and Blue Mountain was opportunistic on our miscues. We did a good job of possessing the ball, but I felt like we could improve on our communication, especially on the defensive end. Cora Abetti, Sloane, and Carley had especially good games for us tonight. Sloane controlled the middle of the field well and was distributing, Carley gave their full backs a lot to handle with extremely active and aggressive play on the wing, and Cora kept their forwards off balance with her speed at the sweeper position,” said head coach Spencer Morse.

Jorga Washburn of Caledonia United and Kayleigh Davis (No. 4) of Oxbow both make a move for the ball during September 20 action in Danville. Caledonia United prevailed 2-0.

Sloane Morse continued to power the offense, finding the game winner on a free kick two minutes into the second half to power CCSU past a dangerous Oxbow team at home last Friday 2-0. Hazel Abetti buried a feed from Jorja Washburn to give the defense a two-goal cushion with 12 minutes to play in regulation. Astick continued her solid play in net for Cal United, making eight saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Caleigh Bean made seven stops for Oxbow as they fell to 3-3-1.

“We put together our best 80 minutes of the season tonight,” said Morse. “The ladies were playing some beautiful soccer, really showcasing their possession skills. Hazel had a fantastic game from her striker position and she, along with Sloane and Carley, are starting to show a lot of chemistry together on the field. Our defense was solid, and Ida had another good performance in goal,”

Cal United looked to keep it rolling on Monday with a trip to Paine Mountain and will travel to Craftsbury Academy on Wednesday for a tough match-up with Hazen Union. They wrap up a busy week by welcoming Winooski to Danville on Saturday for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
