HARDWICK – After an old-fashioned shootout with Division II Enosburg that ended in a draw, the Hazen Union girls’ soccer team feasted on winless Richford and Blue Mountain last week, running their record to 4-1-1.
Sophomore Kelsie Rivard did it all last Tuesday, scoring a pair of goals and closing out the game in net for the Lady Cats, preserving a 4-4 overtime draw at home against Enosburg. Rory Schreindorfer put Hazen on their heels early, burying a perfect feed from Kailie Morrill less than two minutes into the match and converting a penalty kick a minute later to give the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore Mya Lumsden cut it to 2-1 in the eleventh minute with a spectacular individual effort and Rivard beat four Enosburg defenders to level the match at 2-2 heading into the break. Vienna Wilde got a gift from the Lady Cat defense with 14 minutes left to make it 3-2 before Rivard evened the match once again eight minutes later with a 30-yard blast. Isabelle Gouin continued her scoring touch with her fifth goal of the season moments later to give Hazen their first lead, but the defense conceded a soft goal to Gretchen Stiebris in the waning moments to send the match to overtime, ending the scoring on the day. Enosburg improved to 1-3-1 on the season.
Hazen Union’s defense bounced back on Thursday with a solid effort and Gouin provided the offense, netting her second hat-trick in as many weeks to power the Lady Cats to a 3-0 road win over Richford. Julia des Groseilliers, Taylor Thompson, and freshman Ursa Goldenrose each had an assist on the day. Rivard was back in net for Hazen, earning the shutout to drop the Lady Falcons to 0-4.
“Richford is a well-coached competitive team and hot and humid weather was a factor for both clubs. Our offense kicked into high gear courtesy of Isabelle and Brianna Holbrook, Julia, Autumn Dailey, and Craftsbury Academy’s Adelina Augsberger stayed defensively disciplined to complete the win,” said head coach Jay Terrien.
The Lady Cats provided a raucous homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about on Saturday with a pair goals and an assist from Mya Lumsden to down Blue Mountain 4-0. Gouin added another score and two assists, pushing the junior co-captain’s team leading tally to nine goals on the year. Rivard continued to show her versatility for Hazen, returning to her midfield position to tally a goal and an assist on the afternoon. Junior Ella Renaud earned her first shutout of the season, dropping the Lady Bucks to 0-6.
“Taylor had another exceptional day of gritty defensive work to help lead the Lady Cat defense. The cooperative with Craftsbury Academy has been successful within our team and we look forward to a special match being played at Craftsbury this week,” said Terrien.
Coach Terrien’s Lady Cats will look to keep the momentum going as they welcome Twinfield-Cabot-Danville (CCSU) to Dustan Field on Wednesday for the first time. They wrap up their week with a road trip to Blue Mountain on Saturday.
