Lost Woman Found with Aid of Friend

GREENSBORO – On Thursday, Sept. 19, at approximately 9:23 p.m. the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office received notification that a female in her late 70s had been out in the woods and no one had heard from her since approximately 5 p.m.

It was later learned she had made contact with a woman who had located one of her dogs as well as her companion around 6:30 p.m., She indicated then she was lost and trying to get out of the woods before dark.

Deputies Garces, Locke and Sheriff Harlow searched Greensboro in areas believed the female may be searching for her vehicle.

In the early morning hours it was learned she had a good friend who would more than likely know more about where she would be in the woods, he was contacted. Her friend indicated a few places he believed she and her dogs may be, advising he had her dogs on his GPS and would be able to locate them within a 10-mile radius. He and his wife came out to assist in attempting to locate their friend. Many areas were searched in the area of the female’s Greensboro residence.

Her friend listened to a garbled message that was left on her companion’s cell phone and even though it was difficult to understand, he knew exactly where she was talking about.

He led the way, with Deputy Locke following until they located the vehicle and shortly thereafter had a signal on the dogs.

The Sheffield-Wheelock Fire Department was dispatched to assist in the rescue. Deputy Locke, along with her friends, headed out on the trail and located the female who was cold, wet and hungry, but not hurt. Once she was brought safely back to the road, Deputy Locke brought her to meet Hardwick Rescue for an evaluation.

Her friends’ immediate action and assistance was essential to the woman’s rescue in the early morning hours September 20, according to authorities.

Newport Police Department Dispatcher Leinoff worked tracking pings, locations, making phone calls and looking at maps for locations. Barre, Barre Town and Burlington Police Departments all assisted in contacting family members.
