DANVILLE – After suffering a third straight loss at Missisquoi Valley Union to start the week, the Twinfield-Cabot-Danville (CCSU) girls’ soccer team blanked Hazen Union to put their stamp on a signature win, improving to 5-4-1 on the season.
Riley Myers, Leah Thompson, and Dora Gagne each tallied first half goals to power Missisquoi Valley to a 3-0 home win over Cal United last Tuesday. Myers found the back of the net 18 minutes into the match and the Lady Thunderbirds never looked back. Avery Guyette chipped in with an assist and Lizi Bourdeau was stellar in net, making 15 saves to earn her third shutout in four matches. Ida Astick turned away 15 shots in the loss for CCSU.
“Freshman Jaidyn Carson had a fantastic game at half back for us against a very tough team,” said head coach Spencer Morse.

Caledonia United’s goalie Ida Astick, a Twinfield senior, makes one of her many saves against Hazen Union, October 3, in Danville. In back (at left) is her teammate Phoebe Crocker, a Danville student. Caledonia United won 1-0.
Hazel Abetti hammered home a free kick at the 27-foot minute mark to help CCSU avenge an earlier season loss with a hard-fought 1-0 home win over the Lady Cats last Thursday. Ida Astick made five saves before leaving with an injury and Eliska Siebenbrunner filled in to make one save in emergency duty to help preserve the shutout. Kelsie Rivard made six stops for Hazen, who suffered their first loss in seven matches. They fell to 6-2-1 and are ranked third in the current divison III standings. Abetti’s blast was a welcome sight for Morse’s club, who had been shutout in three straight matches, scoring only once in the last five.

“It was a big win for us. We really needed that one right now. We got fantastic effort from the top to the bottom of our lineup. Hazel, Sloane Morse, and Carley Mancini led the team through some great possession and runs. Our fullbacks Taylor Carson, Jorja Washburn, and Phoebe Crocker did a great job of keeping track of their marks and making switches when needed. Cora Abetti was a wall behind them at her sweeper position. Hazel’s shot was an impressive strike and Eliska did a great job coming in to a pressurized spot short notice and made a key save for us. This was a big win for us today. We got to avenge a loss to them two weeks ago against a team that had a big undefeated streak going. It was a huge bounce back for us!” said Morse.
It won’t get any easier for Morse and his squad this week as they travel to face a BFA-Fairfax team that has yet to lose this season. They will stay on the road for a matchup against Oxbow on Friday and travel to Enosburg next Tuesday.
