HARDWICK – Last Tuesday, November 12, eight Hazen Union School students embarked on a mission to collect balsam brush in Greensboro. The brush will be used to produce holiday wreaths they will be selling in the coming weeks.
During their brush picking adventure, students learned how to properly tell good brush from bad brush, how to harvest it and how to bale it for storage.
Jay Modry has been teaching his Building Business class for about four years. Students learn how to run their own business and other important life skills. They meet with local entrepreneurs, learn to use spreadsheets to keep track of their finances, explore marketing strategies, pricing and the risks of borrowing money.
The focus has changed to production and distribution of products as the holiday season approaches.
Students will use spreadsheets to analyze income and expenses, calculate profit and ultimately, their share of the proceeds as the semester winds down.
Students in the class are learning how to make goat milk soap completely from scratch with Hazen Principal Jason Di Giulio, hand made wreaths from balsam brush and Carli Abbott is making greeting cards.
All of the products will be available at the Buffalo Mountain Market in Hardwick and the C-Village store in Craftsbury.
