HARDWICK – On election day, November 5, Hazen Union High School held a mock election as part of the AP U.S. Government and Politics and Government and Civics classes taught by Corey Maskell.
Students also volunteered at Hardwick’s polling place in the town hall, alongside poll workers. All Hazen Union students in grades seven through 12 were invited to register to vote at the mock polls set up in the school’s library and facilitated by Corey Maskell’s students.
“The class’ election-related activities gave students a deeper understanding of the inner workings of elections and the critical role that citizens play in maintaining a healthy democracy,” reads a post published on Hazen Union’s Facebook page on November 5 emphasizing the purpose of the activity.
The election extended beyond teaching students about the inner workings of the United States’ electoral system. The activity aimed to highlight the importance of the participation of the people in a healthy, functional democracy.
The event’s results displayed Donald Trump as Hazen Union’s presidential pick, mirroring the national results. Kamala Harris was in second and student Talon Michaud had a single-vote write-in.
Those who voted were offered “I Voted” stickers to display.
