A view of the northern sky from Stage House Road in Hardwick shows an aurora, often called the northern lights. Vertical streaks are a non-aurora phenomenon called “light pillars” or “ice pillars,” which occur due to terrestrial light reflecting onto ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. It’s hard to say what that light source was in this photo; perhaps Highland Center for the Arts, the Greensboro Fire Station, or perhaps Newport. photo by Josh Kuckens
