CRAFTSBURY – Skiers were out in force last Tuesday, Jan. 14, for mass start skate races at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. The middle school race was the largest with 47 racers from five schools. Isaac Nadzam (U-32) sprinted the 2 km course in 4:45 thirty seconds ahead of second place finishers Oakley Crawford (Craftsbury Academy – CA). People’s Academy (PA) skier Bowman Suddaby was fourth. Aemelia Terrone(CA) was the first female and fifth overall. Other CA skiers included Joe Krebs, Stella Cusack, Finn Nunnery, Eliza Bunton, Mia Stout, Adrienne Robillard, and Evelyn Patch. In the JV race there were 21 starters with Bear Gray (BFA – Fairfax) having the fastest time in 6:13. CA’s Ada Allen was seventh.

In the boys’ varsity 4 km race, Sisu Lange (St. Johnsbury) edged out Zeb Whitlock (Lamoille Union – LU) by five seconds. Magnus Hayden (PA) finished in 11:04 and Max Demaine (Lake Region) 11:05 for some tight racing to the finish line. The varsity course added Moss Run and Dennis for some large down and uphills in the two lap race. CA’s Oryon Hart placed fifth along with Linden Stelma-Leonard, 14, and Stig Link, 25. Lake Regions’s Xavier Chapdeline was 20th. Claire Serrano (U-32) led the varsity girls field in 12:00 followed by Tillie Lange (St. Johnsbury) and Avery Ryna (U-32).
Craftsbury Skiers Race at Sleepy Hollow
HUNTINGTON – A crew of Craftsbury Ski Club (CSC) skiers raced in the Mansfield Nordic sponsored duathalon at Sleepy Hollow Touring Center on January 12. Skiers raced various distances depending on the age class starting with classic skiing and switching to skate skis half way through the race. In the first- and second-grade group, CSC skiers included Paul Stevenson, Ludick Grayling, Scarlett Pelland and Winter Pelland. In the third- and fourth-grade class, Asher Jacobs, Sam Koschak and Bee Johnson took to the 2 km course. David Stevenson and Emerson McCarthy skied in the fifth- and sixth-grade 4 km race, while Isaac Nadzam, Henry Young, Dean Roy, Jin Ramsay, Elliott Stewart and Sage Putman skied in the seventh- and eighth-grade group (4 km). CSC coach Ollie Burress jumped into the open 10 km race finishing third in 34:31 among 38 male starters.
