Third Cross Country Skiing Eastern Cup In Maine
WATERVILLE, Me. – Craftsbury Ski Club (CSC) Coaches Jake Barton, Anna Schultz and Audrey Mangon have taken on coaching and counselor roles escorting nearly 20 young skiers for a long weekend of ski racing at Quarry Road in Waterville. What a great experience to hang out with fellow teens, eat lots of food, have two nights without mom or dad and put on skis and race for two days. Moms and dads do show up to cheer at the races. In the men’s 10 km freestyle race with interval starts, James Underwood (Ford Sayre, Hanover NH) won in 27:49 with CSC skiers Zeb Whitlock 18, Sisu Lange 23, Asa Lloyd 42, Luke Murphy 45 and Magnus Hayden 46. In the ladies 10 km race, Beth McIntosh (Green Mountain Valley School) won in 32:03 with CSC’s Amelia Circosta 3rd, Tillie Lange 8, Isabel Linton 13, Sara Salligman-McGill 14, Emily Linton 27, Anya Moriarity 36, Clare Pritchard 56 and Anna Wetherell 63. In the Under 16 (U16) group, Oryon Haron placed 18, Graham Moriarity 20 and Riley Volk 37. Leila Griffiths was 9th in the U16 girls race and Sierra Putman 22.
On day-two in the mass start 10 km classic race, Sisu Lange moved up to 17th and Samuel Brondyke finished 19th. The suspense was in the women’s 10 km where CSC’s Circosta out-toed GMVS’s McIntosh by 0.1 second finishing in 32:52.6. Lange placed 17th, Salligman-McGill 18 and Anika Leahy 22. This was Circosta’s first weekend of ski racing after a foot injury hampered her this fall and early winter. Circosta had several top 10 finishes at U.S. Junior Nationals. There is one more weekend of New England Nordic Ski Association Eastern Cup racing action to determine which skiers represent the Northeast division at U.S. Junior Nationals in Utah in March.
