CRAFTSBURY – On February 12, Sara Saligman McGill (Montpelier) pulled off a bit of an upset winning the mass start 5 km classic ski race ahead of Claire Serrano (U-32) by 0.3 seconds in 18:25.6. We’ll see if she can keep the momentum next week at the first state meet (freestyle) to be held at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Thursday, Feb. 20. The second state meet ski race (classic) will be February 25 at Prospect Mountain near Bennington.
Ada Allen from Craftsbury Academy (CA) raced in one of her first varsity races placing 22nd/ Nora Demaine (Lake Region) was 27th. In the boys varsity race, the top three spots went to Montpelier skiers Asa Lloyd (15:29), Luke Murphy and Samuel Brondyke. Without much racing against the Chittenden County and central and southern Vermont schools, it will be interesting to see how Montpelier fares at the state meet with strong results like this. CA’s Soren Stelma-Leonard had one of his best races of the year placing fourth. Lake Region (skiing with CA) had three skiers in the mix with Xavier Chapdeline (14), Linden Urie (24) and Eli Davis (25). Teams at the meet included South Burlington, BFA Fairfax, BFA St. Albans, U-32, Montpelier and CA.
In the middle school race, CA’s Oakley Crawford finished right behind U-32s Isaac Nadzam in 9:23. PA’s Henry Young was third. Aemilia Terrone (CA) placed fourth overall and was the first female finisher in 10:44. Other CA finishers included Stella Cussack, Eliza Bunton, Joe Krebs and Evie Patch.
