GREENSBORO — A recent debate on Front Porch Forum led to questions about the safety of the town hall space, and whether its tenants were aware of these issues, such as the alleged presence of lead paint or corroded pipes.
According to Lorelei Wheeler, administrative assistant at the Mountain View Elementary School District, lead and other hazardous materials have not posed a risk to past students. “In 2020-2021, just as the merger was in place, we also brought everyone back together at the main building. The lead issue was only found on door casings and painted doors, I think. When the reno was done . . . lots of things got painted.” Wheeler says she doesn’t know if that means the lead was sealed.
“Lead paint was expensive. Milk paint and other cheaper solutions were used when you had to use lots of paint. And as far as asbestos and lead go, we had a clear letter of occupancy since the lead standard did not exist for schools in 2012.” Wheeler added.
A 2018 architectural report conducted by William Gallup Architecture and Planning LLC., did not document any serious safety concerns. The report evaluates the feasibility of modifying the building to be ADA compliant, create an enclosed exit stairway from the third floor, and determine the feasibility of converting the second and third floor spaces from their current uses.
The 2024 fire marshal’s report lists only four recommendations, saying there are numerous electrical violations, emergency light and exit inspections are needed, there was a mechanical room issue and door-stoppers were needed on rated doors. There is no mention of lead, corroded pipes, or safety risks that could pose a threat to the building’s current tenants. Similarly to the architect’s report, no hazardous materials or safety risks are mentioned.
