SOUTH ROYALTON – The Peoples Academy (PA) girls basketball team and their amazing turnaround under first year head coach and Hazen Union alum Rick Welcome will now go to the Barre Auditorium after wins over BFA-Fairfax and White River Valley last week in the Division III playoffs.
Welcome and his young team survived a first-round battle with the twelfth seeded Lady Bullets on Wednesday, using a 10-2 run in the final eight minutes to escape with a 47-37 win. Eighth-grader Daisy Berg led the way for the Lady Wolves with a team-high 17 points and Sadie Baranyay complemented with 14 in the win. Sophomore Adi See led all scorers with 20 points in the loss.
Their Cinderella season continued on Saturday with a 44-38 road upset over #4 White River to punch their ticket to the Aud. Berg and Sophie Beck led the way with 15 points apiece. Ashlyn Rhoades led the Lady Cats with 15 as their season came to an end at 18-4.
Welcome’s green ball-club that includes four eighth graders on the roster, earned their sixteenth win of the season. They are just a year removed from winning a single game and electing not to participate in the division III state tournament.
The team will take on top seeded Oxbow on Thursday night at the Barre Auditorium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45pm.
