GREENSBORO — The greater Greensboro community celebrated Shrove Tuesday on March 4, with a free sit-down pancake supper at Greensboro’s United Church of Christ. Organized by Deacons Chair Shelly Jungwirth, church ladies and relatives prepared pancakes, warm maple syrup, and sausages for the annual supper that marks the celebration preceding the somber 40 days of Lent and Christ’s Crucifixion.

Shrove Tuesday’s name comes from the old custom of confessing, or being shriven, on that day. Many people choose to fast starting Ash Wednesday, therefore Shrove Tuesday becomes the day to use up all the rich food in the house, resulting in the tradition of pancakes.

Attendance at the supper may have been affected by the all-day Greensboro town meeting and snowy weather. That didn’t stop the rambunctious Casavant and Sims-Fellinger youngsters, who ended up playing tag with Reverend Sunday-Winters as the clean-up crew put tables away.
