MIDDLESEX – Hazen Union and Craftsbury Academy (CA) teacher-coach Maxfield English, made it two straight wins earlier this month, with a dominant performance at the 5.7-mile Bear Swamp Run at Rumney Memorial School.
English was the first competitor to cross the finish line with a time of 35:33, holding off Montpelier’s Luke Miller (36:30) for the second time in three weeks. The 49-year-old also made the 30-year-old Miller a bridesmaid by over 58 seconds at the Birdland 5K Trail Run in late June.
Hardwick’s Elizabeth McCarthy posted a strong performance in Middlesex, winning her female 70-79 age group with a time of 58:33.
Former Hardwick Gazette contributor Jim Flint claimed a runner-up finish in his 60-69 age group with a time of 42:18, finishing an impressive tenth overall.
“The Bear Swamp course is challenging with 450 feet of elevation gain in the first 2.2 miles. The weather was warm and humid. The field of 60 runners was the largest in many years. No bears were reported!” said Flint.
During the school year, English is the varsity head coach for the CA cross-country and Hazen Union track and field programs. He has become a juggernaut on the Central Vermont Runners and Onion River Outdoor circuits and will look to defend his Caspian Challenge title this Sunday in Greensboro.
