About 30 people turned out July 17 for a “Good Trouble Live On” rally along S. Main St. in Hardwick on the fifth anniversary of U.S. Rep. John Lewis’ passing. Organizers of more than 1000 similar gatherings nationwide throughout the weekend used the opportunity to say “the most brazen rollback of Civil Rights in generations” should not be tolerated.

Beginning from left to right, Carol Ray, Mary Gagnon, and Ruth Galliard declare “Good trouble lives on” with their assorted signs. Longtime activist Mary Gagnon said “3.5 percent of us are going to stand up for the constitution.” Gagnon is no stranger to protest movements, having been active during the Iraq war in the wake of the highly debated post 9/11 war on terror. “We’re still here!” Gagnon exclaimed, “and I intend to be here every Thursday that I can.”
Gagnon said that since October 7., attendance has waxed and waned, but the No Kings movement helped grow people’s attention. The Thursday rally events are not formally organized, according to Gagnon. “The groups that meet here are citizens, whoever shows up, whenever,” she said.
