ST. JOHNSBURY – Several local competitors were major contributors over the weekend as St. Johnsbury put on a dominant performance to claim the title at the Vermont Recreation and Parks Youth Track and Field State Championships.
The St. Johnsbury team blitzed the field on Saturday, tallying 613 points across all age divisions, with Colchester finishing second with a total of 334.
Danville’s Landon Garrand swept the 100m prelims and final to claim the title for St. Jay, edging Colchester’s Anthony Bissonnette by a little more than a half second in the boys 13-15 age division. Garrand also dominated the 400m final for his second title of the afternoon. Garrand capped off his sensational day with a runner-up finish to Bissonnette in the long jump.
On the girls side, Danville’s Althaea Irwin was even more impressive in her 13-15 age division for St. Jay, claiming three titles on the day. Irwin edged Mount Mansfield’s Fiona Rapp to win the 80m hurdles title, clipped Colchester’s Brynn Barrett to capture the long jump event, and ran the opening leg in a dominant performance over Montgomery to win the 4x100m relay title.
The host team swept all four boys age divisions and two out of four on the girls side at Raymond Frey Track to run away with the overall championship.
