NORWICH – The Hazen Union girls basketball team capped off a torrid summer with a clean sweep at the Norwich University Hoop Camp over the weekend.
Head coach Randy Lumsden led his Lady Cat program to their second Division III state title in three years this past March. He has one of the best players in the state in senior Kelsie Rivard, who is already a 1,000-point career scorer and reigning Capital League Player of the Year. Rivard’s talented senior running mates Mya Lumsden, Taylor Thompson and Autumn Dailey have been in midseason form this summer, posting impressive wins over Lamoille, Peoples Academy (PA), North Country, Spaulding and Lake Region. Fifteen teams competed at the Norwich Camp, and Lumsden’s Lady Cats were the last team standing. He’s been impressed by how his seniors have embraced their new leadership roles this summer.
“These seniors came in as talented freshmen over three years ago, and they’ve always been a very dedicated group. They all know what it takes to get to where we want to go in March, and they’ve really enjoyed helping our younger players develop this summer. We lost a good group to graduation over the spring that gave us important depth to our team last season. Our young players are plenty capable of filling that role this coming season. They just need to have the mindset of coming in and being ready to put in the work,” said Lumsden.
The Lady Cats have two more weeks in the Lamoille and PA Summer League before switching out their basketball shoes for soccer spikes in August.
