Ivan first operated his own logging truck in the family pulp business. Later was employed by the Town of Hardwick as a heavy equipment operator. At the same time, he was a member of the Hardwick Police Force with his brothers Phil and Fidelle. He was often seen on duty at barn dances, and school events. He retired in 1993.

In his youth, Ivan and close friends were known to hitchhike to Boston for a Red Sox game. He also attended and followed local sports. He enjoyed vacation, Saturday night dances and playing cards, but most of all, he was a quiet man who enjoyed his family, friends, and home.
